Create Emergency Walk-Out Document

The last thing to go in your bag should be an emergency walk-out document which provides you with instructions for various things like turning off the gass to the house or turning off water to the house or fiddling with the water heater or pilot lights if you still have an appliance that has that...

Other simple things - turn off heating and air conditioning - maybe at the breaker even.

Make sure that your departure list has a reasonable set of chores. Try to do as many so long as it's safe to do so. Examples are:

  • Grab some fresh water, and if possible some non-salty snacks. A container of peanut butter can go a long way as a power food. Having a box of protein bars in the cupboard to grab in a pinch is also pretty smart.
  • Disconnect the car battery – If the car will be parked for a long time, disconnect the battery to prevent it from draining.
  • Disable the garage door opener – Prevent it from being opened remotely. If possible, lock it with a combination lock.
  • Shut off water heater – This will save energy and prevent potential malfunctions. For tank-based systems, it's especially important.
  • Turn off the main water valve – This prevents leaks, burst pipes, and water damage while you're away.
  • Drain water pipes – Especially in colder climates, to prevent pipes from freezing.
